When I made this vessel I had in mind a tall loving cup or a ‘Celebration vase’. It was the second ever ‘joined’ pot I made during my degree studies at Cheltenham (where several thrown forms are joined). The figures around the rim, from my own modelling, were inspired by prehistoric rock art which is believed to represent a couple in sexual union.<\/p>\n
I took great delight in the ornate handles, which reference spermatoza, as I’m fascinated by symbolism, which I felt was appropriate for a loving cup.<\/p>\n
The ring of small face sprigs, on the front, form a cartouche containing an under-glaze ‘lino-cut’ oxide print. I call him the ‘Bird man’. The idea was an exploration of adding commemorative details within the cartouche, and I may return to this in future for commemorative commissions.<\/p>\n
